All the details about the house set in the Netflix series

In Not a good deedthree families are vying for the same dream home in Los Angeles. Located in the sought-after Los Feliz neighborhood, the 1920s Spanish-style villa has undeniable appeal for all potential buyers. It features a newly renovated kitchen and exudes character thanks to an original fireplace, stained glass windows and romantic archways. But unfortunately, viewers have no hope that one day there will be a bidding war for the property.

For the dark Netflix comedy, production designer Nina Ruscio and her team built all of the house’s interiors on a sound stage. From the outside it looks like a real house – but it’s actually in Hancock Park, about 20 minutes’ drive southwest of Los Feliz. This is partly for logistical reasons; The neighborhood has flatter streets that are better for filming, Ruscio says, but also because “there are actually a limited number of Spanish houses in the world, and there are a limited number of Spanish houses that are fabulous in Los Angeles.”

Also a priority was finding a house on a corner lot that would attract passers-by. “I wanted to find a house that felt like it had a soul,” says creator and showrunner Liz Feldman. Feldman credits director Silver Tree with encouraging her to find a house that felt like it was extending its arms like a hug. “And then we found this house,” says Feldman, “literally located on this picturesque corner and with wings that really embrace you.”

While the facade was striking at first glance, it was also significantly spiced up for the series. “We actually put a lot of green space on the outside of this location, and we added tile and all that work,” Ruscio says. “And the second you open the door, I’ve actually built a set piece inside. So there is no part of this really practical exterior that we use as interior space at all, not even an inch in the front door.”

The dreamy – and spacious – kitchen.

The on-screen interiors – which are much more spacious than the real-life home – had to appeal to many emotional levels to make potential buyers hungry. They gave the kitchen a large island, modern appliances, lots of natural light, and a charming tile backsplash—catnip for families who love cooking and eating together. “Why don’t you buy a house?” Renovations need to be done,” says Ruscio.

Unique architectural elements and other appealing details ensure the home is alluring. In the living room, the fireplace is a historic centerpiece. With soft curves and a wooden mantel, the fireplace actually works and features custom tiles depicting a tangerine tree and peacocks (Easter eggs as plot points in the series). Leaded glass windows throughout the house underline the character.

Although the furnishings aren’t technically part of the house, the wing keeps buyers on the edge of their seats. The instrument actually dates back to the 19th century. “It had an extremely unique sound, a little off balance,” says Ruscio. “A lot of the music you hear comes from this real piano.”

Although the dream house is not real, Not a good deed was inspired by Feldman’s personal search for a home in Los Angeles during the pandemic. “We were all literally locked in our homes, and suddenly our homes took on an almost supernatural significance, like it was the only place we were safe,” she says.

Like many others, Feldman went surfing Zillow. The pastime became “a great escape because you could kind of walk into other people’s houses and feel like you were visiting someone else for a moment and not in your own house,” says Feldman. “And then (my wife and I) started looking at houses, and every time we walked through a new door I could just feel that there was a story there, especially in a time as turbulent and difficult as the pandemic .”

She began to imagine the many stories behind every real estate transaction. “There’s a reason why people sell, and it’s not always a happy reason. Sometimes it’s a very stressful reason or sometimes it’s a pretty tragic reason. And I realized there was an opportunity here to use the background of buying and selling a home to tell a lot of interesting, overlapping stories that people could relate to.”
