The 5 Best New Movies to Stream This Week on Netflix, Max, Disney Plus and More (December 17-23)

It’s the week before Christmas and the best streaming services are celebrating with some of the last new movie releases of 2024. Netflix, Max and Disney Plus are each adding something new for you to watch over the holidays.

You should watch the Max debut of “Juror No.” this week. 2” cannot be missed. This legal thriller is the latest (and supposedly last) film from Clint Eastwood and is about a young man struggling with a damning ethical dilemma. It’s a hugely entertaining film that earned me a spot on my list of favorite films of the year. Other notable additions include war drama “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix and horror thriller “Cuckoo,” which is finally making its way to Hulu.

“Blink” is an inspiring, uplifting documentary about the Pelletier family. Edith Lemay and Sébastien Pelletier are two loving parents who face a nightmare situation when three of their four children are diagnosed with a rare and incurable disease called retinitis pigmentosa, which causes severe vision problems. Since their children will lose their sight due to the genetic disorder, they embark on a trip around the world to experience the beauty of the world.

As they visit breathtaking destinations and experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures together, family strength, resilience and curiosity are on full display. But above all, the Pelletier family proves that whatever comes their way will not spoil the present they have today. “Blink” was a hit and critics scored a strong 87% Rotten tomatoes and was praised for transforming “the travelogue format into a moving family testimony.”

“Cuckoo” appears to have all the ingredients it needs to become a cult classic, and after a limited theatrical run and time on PVOD, it is now set to arrive on Hulu, potentially giving the horror-thriller its biggest boost in popularity yet. Directed by Tilman Singer and starring Hunter Schafer, “Cuckoo” follows a 17-year-old American girl named Gretchen who moves overseas to live with her distant father in the German Alps after the death of her mother.

Gretchen feels uncomfortable in this strange environment, has frightening visions and hears strange noises. This all leads to a shocking family secret coming to light that turns Gretchen’s entire world upside down. Starring Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick, “Cuckoo” is an inventive thrill ride that features strong performances from Schafer and Stevens and a very creative twist.

“Small Things Like These” represents a very different kind of Christmas film. While most works in the genre are loud and colorful, this Irish drama is a subdued affair with a sober tone and a slower pace. Its dark theme makes it an occasionally challenging watch, but don’t let that stop you from streaming it over the holidays. Cillian Murphy’s stellar lead performance is reason enough to see the film, and by the end you’ll find a new sense of hope that feels appropriately seasonal.

Set in 1985, Cillian Murphy plays Bill Furlong, a hard-working coal merchant and family man with a difficult childhood. Just before Christmas, Bill discovers a young girl locked in the coal shed of a local monastery while he’s making his deliveries. This leads to disturbing secrets coming to light as the Catholic Church takes control of the city, and Bill faces ostracism from the community for standing up for what is right.

“Juror #2” (Max)

“Juror No. 2” is one of my favorite films of 2024 and is scheduled to be released by Max this week. So you really have no excuse to skip this legal thriller that was announced as Clint Eastwood’s final film. If it is true that the cinema legend is leaving the screen with this film, what a conclusion to a truly remarkable career. “Juror No. 2” is one of the most entertaining films of the year and will keep you guessing until the end and then discussing the ethical dilemma underlying the film for hours after the credits roll.

Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult) is a recovering alcoholic and expectant father who is called to jury duty for a high-profile murder case. Being separated from his heavily pregnant wife is bad enough, but as the trial begins, Justin realizes to his horror that he is (inadvertently) actually responsible for the crime and not the man currently on trial. “Juror No. 2” starring Toni Collette, JK Simmons and Kiefer Sutherland is a must-see legal thriller.

Netflix is looking to end its year on a high note with “The Six Triple Eight,” a new World War II drama from Tyler Perry that the streamer hopes will have a more positive reception than the director’s crime thriller “Mea Culpa,” which has a a miserable 18 premiere had % on Rotten tomatoes already in February. Fortunately, this war film has already received more positive reviews. However, it’s unlikely to be an award player, which is perhaps a disappointment.

Featuring an ensemble cast including Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris and Oprah Winfrey, “The Six Triple Eight” focuses on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-black, all-female group tasked with adhering to a three- year mail jam. Faced with discrimination and harsh wartime conditions, this group of heroes banded together to serve their country and bring a powerful message of hope to those on the front lines.
