“I’m not doing that”… The one thing Kobe Bryant didn’t want to do at LA Lakers practice

A former Lakers assistant head coach told the story of Kobe Bryant’s stubborn insistence on not working on a particular practice drill.

Kobe Bryant was one of the most dedicated players in NBA history. There was nothing Bryant wouldn’t do to be successful.

Kobe had an unquenchable thirst for success. And that drive allowed him to become one of the greatest players in NBA history.

With five championships, two Finals MVPs, a regular season MVP and 18 All-Star selections, Bryant established himself as one of the best to ever do it.

Kobe Bryant refused to do one thing in practice

But there was one thing even Kobe Bryant refused to do in training. Speaking to Paul George on his podcast, former Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy told the story.

Handy asked Kobe to practice dribbling with two basketballs. Surprisingly, Kobe said no and claimed that they didn’t play games with two basketballs.

“We looked at ball handling. And I wanted him to master two-ball handling. He was like, ‘Man, get out of here!’ I won’t do that! I don’t dribble with two balls in the game. What is this for?’.”

“He was relentless… Do you know what he did? … He picked up both basketballs and started dribbling with his eyes closed.”

Bryant was clearly keen not to perform a drill that he couldn’t incorporate into his game on the court. And it’s hard to argue against him.

Kobe shows his love to Kyrie Irving

In the same interview, Phil Handy also told the story of Kobe Bryant, who decided to help Kyrie Irving. Bryant didn’t even hesitate to give Irving his contact information.

Bryant loved the sport of basketball more than anything other than his family. So it’s no surprise that he’s supporting a young player.

The Lakers legend is one of the most influential figures in the history of sports. And his influence is still felt in the league today, as several players look to emulate the man they grew up with.
