Jason Reitman reveals Chevy Chase’s awkward reaction to his SNL film

Controversial actor Chevy Chase played a key role in its creation Saturday Night Live as one of the original cast members of the legendary sketch comedy series. However, he doesn’t seem to be thrilled with the feature film that was made about the very first episode of the series.

Saturday eveningDirected by Jason Reitman, it hit theaters in September. Gotham Actor Cory Michael Smith played the version of Chase in the film, and although the film did not live up to expectations at the box office, its reviews were positive. Not all As it turns out, he was a fan of the film, as Chase himself was one of the first to give it a bad review. Per Deadline, Reitman spoke with David Spade and Dana Carvey Fly on the wall podcast when he shared Chase’s reaction to it Saturday evening.

A few days after he announced he quit directing Christmas Vacation because of Chevy Chase, Chris Columbus explained why.

“So, Chevy comes in to watch the movieand he’s there with (wife) Jayni and they’re watching the movie, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me afterwards and taps me on the shoulder and says, “Well, you should be embarrassed‘” Reitman said. Spade joked by commenting that “you couldn’t even write it better,” while Carvey added that Chase “knows that’s funny, like that’s the hardest thing you can say to a director right now, or at the top.” “

Reitman continued, “I’m trying to balance that because in my head I know, ‘Okay, I’m having my own Chevy Chase moment, which is 1,000 percent just for me right now.’ And from a comedic perspective, it’s really pure and kind of cool. But also, I just spent two years of my life recreating this moment and trying to capture Chevy perfectlyand also in the ego, finding humanity and giving it a moment to be loved – no, none of that worked. He doesn’t talk about that stuff.”

Saturday evening was co-written by Reitman and him Ghostbusters: Afterlife And Frozen Empire Employee Gil Kenan. The film also starred Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris and Kim see Matula as Jane Curtin.

Dan Aykroyd felt differently about the film

“I hit my head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumph SNL Movie,” Aykroyd said in an X post after watching the film. “Wow! What a driving, captivating, fun, beautifully cast and acted, exciting, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect insight into the creative process at the highest level. Pretty accurate too. I was there that evening and was able to experience it again wonderfully. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don’t miss it whether you know the show or not. It’s a masterpiece in its own right and a surefire contender for Best Picture.”
