The head nurse is urging everyone to get vaccinated and stay healthy this Christmas

Allison Cannon, Chief Nursing Officer at NHS Sussex, is calling on people who have not yet come forward their seasonal vaccinations to act now and protect themselves and their loved ones in the run-up to Christmas.

So far this season, over 450,000 people in Sussex have received their flu and Covid vaccinations. With festive celebrations just around the corner, the NHS is advising everyone who is eligible for a free flu vaccination to make an appointment as soon as possible.

The national booking service for flu and Covid-19 vaccinations will close on December 20th. Eligible people are therefore asked to book now while appointments are still available this way.

Influenza is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in vulnerable groups. With flu and Covid-19 circulating this winter, vaccination is more important than ever to keep people safe and ensure everyone can enjoy a healthy holiday season.

Flu symptoms like fever, chills, headaches, and extreme fatigue can come on quickly and disrupt plans. The flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the risk of serious illness and protect friends, family and the community.

There are flu vaccination clinics across Sussex, offering appointments at GP practices, pharmacies and other local NHS services. Eligible groups include pregnant women, school-aged children, caregivers and people with certain health conditions. Many may also be offered a vaccination against Covid-19 at the same appointment.

For your convenience, walk-in locations are available for the COVID-19 vaccine, and the flu vaccine can also be booked by searching for a local pharmacy online. Anyone who is eligible for a flu vaccination does not have to wait for an invitation to make an appointment. Adults aged 18 and over can book their flu vaccination online or via the NHS app, including appointments at participating pharmacies. To find a pharmacy offering NHS flu vaccinations, visit the NHS website. Alternatively, eligible people can contact their GP practice to make an appointment. For those who do not have access to online services, appointments can also be booked by calling 119.

You can get the free NHS flu vaccine if you are aged 65 or over, including those who will turn 65 by March 31, 2025, have certain long-term health problems, are pregnant, live in a care home or are the main carer are for an elderly or disabled person or if you receive care allowance, or if you live with someone who has a weakened immune system. Frontline health and social care workers can also receive the vaccine through their employer.

Allison Cannon said: “Christmas is a time of joy and togetherness, but the flu can ruin these special moments.” By getting vaccinated, you are not only protecting yourself, but also your loved ones and the NHS at this busy time of year year. If you are eligible and have not yet had your vaccination, please don’t wait, book today and join the thousands across Sussex who are already protected.”
