Costco and Aldi announce closures on New Year’s Day, but many stores remain open: Find out where to shop here

As New Year’s Eve and New Year approaches this week, many are preparing to ring in 2025 with fresh outfits, accessories and last-minute essentials.

Luckily for shoppers, most major retailers are open to help you prepare for the celebration – but hours may vary.

Whether you’re looking for a stunning new shirt, a stylish pair of shoes or some cozy pajamas for New Year’s Eve, you’ll find plenty of stores open.

Many retail stores have adjusted hours on both December 31st and January 1st, but most chains are making it easy for customers to stock up for the festivities.

While there are plenty of options to get your shopping done this week, be sure to check individual store hours before you go as many locations may have special holiday schedules.

Here’s what you need to know about retailers and whether they’ll be open on Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Costco

The wholesale retail giant will close its U.S. locations full time on January 1 to give employees time with family.

However, Costco will be open during regular hours on New Year’s Eve (December 31), allowing members to shop for last-minute items before the end of the year.

Aldi

The discount supermarket chain will also remain closed on New Year’s Day and will reopen on January 2nd, but will remain open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve.

Aldi fans need to plan their Specialbuy shopping spree in advance.

Walmart

All Walmart stores will be open regular hours on both December 31st and January 1st.

Goal

Target closes at 9:00 p.m. local time on New Year’s Eve, but will be open for regular hours on New Year’s Day.

Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s will be open on December 31 during its usual Sunday business hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but all 597 locations will remain closed on New Year’s Day.

Kroger

According to the website, most Kroger stores will stick to regular hours both days, offering shoppers access to everything from fresh produce to party supplies.

Sam’s Club

In accordance with Costco, Sam’s Club will close on January 1st.

You can expect reduced opening hours on New Year’s Eve, as many locations close at 6 p.m.

Kohl’s

On December 31st, Kohl’s stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on January 1st from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and HomeGoods

All three stores are open on New Year’s Eve from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on New Year’s Day from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

JCPenney

JCPenney locations will open at 11 a.m. on December 31 and closing times will vary by location.

JCPenney said stores will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time on New Year’s Day.

Nordstrom

On December 31, Nordstrom will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will return to regular hours on New Year’s Day.

Home Depot, Lowe’s and Ace Hardware

Both hardware stores, Home Depot and Lowe’s, will be open on December 31st but will close at 6 p.m.

Ace Hardware stores are independently owned and operated, so store hours may vary by location. Customers are encouraged to contact their local store for specific holiday hours.

On January 1, Home Depot will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Lowe’s will have varying hours depending on location. Ace Hardware is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

REI

Open December 31st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., REI from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 1st.

IKEA

Ikea stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, the company confirmed.

IKEA stores will be open on New Year’s Day, but with reduced opening hours.

Large quantities

Big Lots is open December 31st from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will continue to serve you during regular business hours in January.

Macy’s

Macy’s will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, while most Macy’s will be open regular hours on New Year’s Day.

Burlington

Burlington stores will be open on December 31st and are expected to close at 10:00 p.m. local time.

Shops will be open on New Year’s Day, although opening hours may vary. Please check with your local store for opening hours.

Belk

Belk will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, the company confirmed, while hours will vary on New Year’s Day. Shoppers are encouraged to use the store locator tool to find out if their local store will be open on January 1st.

Sephora

The company confirmed that each Sephora location has different hours depending on the region and/or the mall’s mandated hours.

Customers can use the company’s store locator to find specific store hours.

Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s

Both stores are open December 31st and New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax

Staples stores will remain open but are expected to close at 6 p.m. local time on Dec. 31, the company told USA TODAY.

Stores close at their regular closing time if the store in question normally closes earlier than 6:00 p.m.

Office Depot and OfficeMax stores are also open and close at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, according to the company.

PetSmart and PetCo

PetSmart stores will be open December 31 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while PetCo stores will be open regular hours and close at 7 p.m. local time.

Tractor supplier

Tractor Supply Co. stores are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
