Sherrone Moore talks about Michigan’s offense and Chip Lindsey’s hiring

New Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is with the Michigan football program in Tampa ahead of the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl match against Alabama. Tight ends coach Steve Casula is taking over the offensive coordinator duties on an interim basis following the firing of former offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell.

With so many ideas, thoughts and voices contributing to what Michigan’s offense will look like in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl, it’s hard to say what the Wolverines’ plan of attack will look like on Tuesday afternoon.

Will Michigan come out and implement a modified version of Campbell’s plan? Will Casula implement his ideas just for one game? What role will Lindsey play in developing the game plan?

Well, Michigan’s coaches answered some of those questions ahead of the New Year’s Eve game.

“Michigan’s offense is Michigan’s offense,” Casula said Friday at the team’s first practice in Tampa. “You know, relative to our roster, the play caller, kind of where we were as a program. The offense, the fundamentals of the offense, have been the same for some time. But, you know, every game, every squad.” “Every available and scheduled group of people kind of dictates the approach you take. And we’re really focused.”

Michigan will be without its two leading receivers (Colston Loveland and Tyler Morris) and rushers (Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards) in Tuesday afternoon’s contest, so things will undoubtedly look a little different than they have in the first 12 games of the season.

Lindsey has primarily taken on an observer role throughout the bowl preparation process. Given that a large group of younger players are poised to take on larger roles against Alabama, it appears that Michigan will stick with most of its approaches as the bowl preparation season progresses.

Moore commented on the offense during Monday’s joint press conference with Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer.

“The best thing about offense is just that if you want to have a really good offense, you have to tell a story about what you do and how you do it, and you have to give the best players the ball and that.” We’re going to bring in the best players and do things that our players are really good at,” Moore said. “At the end of the day, that’s what we’re going to do this week and this game and not try to be too crazy and unconventional, but we’re going to have some concrete things that we have. The game, and when you attack that defense, it’s difficult , to deal with that defense and you have to have a plan for different things that they do. For us it will be about giving football to the best players making sure they have an impact on the game and can control the clock.

After the ReliaQuest Bowl, Michigan will begin preparing for the 2025 season, in which Lindsey will assume the full-time role of offensive coordinator. Moore noted Monday that Lindsey’s previous relationship with new quarterback Mikey Keene played a big role in bringing in the former Fresno State quarterback to bolster the room.

“It’s an open competition. No one is promised a specific place. Everyone has to earn it and he really understands that, even with the guys we brought in. So he’s really excited to push the whole space forward. He’s a guy who gets played. “He’s played a lot of football, has a lot of experience and is very familiar with Chip Lindsey. But all the reviews we got from him helped us a lot as players and it was great to see him live in action this year. We saw him make some really good throws and do some dynamic things.
