Sonny Smart passed away today

Sonny Smart passed away at 12:15 a.m. on January 4, 2025, surrounded by his wife Sharon and their three children: Karl, Kirby and Kendall.

Sonny fell while walking in New Orleans during the day on New Year’s Eve and broke his hip. He was hospitalized and underwent hip replacement surgery; Unfortunately, complications arose. He fought bravely but could not overcome his injuries.

The Smart family extends our heartfelt thanks to Ochsner Hospital and the medical staff for their exceptional care of Sonny.

In addition, they ask for your continued prayers for the people affected by the tragic events in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The Smart family appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength and guidance.

• Georgia opens SEC play Saturday at No. 24/23 Ole Miss looking to continue its best start to a season in 94 years. The Bulldogs are 12-1 for the first time since 1930-31.

• Seven of the Bulldogs’ eight games in January are against teams ranked in this week’s AP Poll, including back-to-back games against No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Auburn, as well as additional dates with No. 6 Florida and No. 10Kentucky.

• Georgia has become the “Dunkyard Dawgs” this season. The Bulldogs’ national-leading 19.7 percent of field goals were dunks, and Asa Newell ranks third nationally with 34 slams.

• The Bulldogs’ balanced offense features nine players who have combined for 57 double-figure goals, led by freshman Asa Newell with 12 double-figure performances.

• Georgia entered the weekend among the top 50 teams in the country in 12 stats, including top 20 grades in blocks (No. 5 at 6.0 bpg), FG percentage (No. 12 at .507) and rebound margin (No. 12). at +10.4 RPG), points margin (No. 18 at +18.5) and 3-point FG defense (No. 16 at .280).
