Mustangs come to Hawaii on Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Second-year forward Sierra Lichtie And Mary Carter Both scored in double figures, but Cal Poly was unable to get its offense going as the Mustangs lost 62-50 at home to the University of Hawai’i on Saturday.

Lichtie scored a team-high 11 points and had 11 rebounds off the bench, while Carter finished with 10 points. guards Ashley Hiraki And Sydney Bourland Each scored nine points for the Mustangs (6-8, 1-3 Big West), who shot 31 percent from the field and 20 percent from three.

Hawai’i (7-6, 1-2 Big West), the 2022 and 2023 Big West champions, had three in double figures as they shot 40 percent from the field. Guard Lily Wahinekapu and forward Meilani McBee each had 14, while forward Brooklyn Rewers had 11.

The Rainbow Wahine scored the first five points of the game before Hiraki hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Cal Poly the lead midway through the first quarter. The Mustangs led 16-13 after the first quarter and their 18-13 lead in the second quarter would be their largest of the game.

Hawaii went on a 15-4 run in the first seven minutes of the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead. They finished the second quarter outscoring the Mustangs 19-5 and led 32-21 at halftime.

With eight minutes left in the third, Cal Poly went on a 6-0 run to get back to within eight, and later got back to within eight with less than a minute left in the third. However, the Mustangs were never able to reduce the deficit to less than eight.

Next up, Cal Poly hosts UC San Diego at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 9th at the Mott Athletics Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
