BREAKING: Kaliyev goes on waivers

Arthur Kaliyev’s time with the Los Angeles Kings has taken an unexpected turn as the team looks to clear a spot on the roster. Kaliyev, who was drafted 33rd overall by the Kings in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, was placed on waivers today. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the move raises questions about the uncertainty of his future.

Kaliyev’s potential as a top scorer and offensive player could be of great value to any team in the NHL. Although he spent much of his time with the Ontario Reign of the AHL (American Hockey League) during the 2024-25 season, his opportunities in the professional league were limited, which prevented him from establishing himself in the top group and becoming a consistent goalscorer Kings need.

By waiving Kaliyev, any team can claim him within 24 hours. If he clears waivers, he will be assigned to the Ontario Reign to further develop his skills. However, his low salary, young age and potential to perform well offensively make him a desirable candidate for potential organizations.

Kaliyev’s most productive NHL seasons were 2022-23 (13 goals and 28 points) and 2021-22, closely followed by 27 points, but he still has room to grow and reach his full potential. On the positive side, the 1.90 meter tall Tashkent native is still young and has not yet reached his best, as his playmaking tendency is a notable aspect of his game. In 188 career games, he totaled 35 goals, 36 assists and 71 points.

A few days before the preseason, he signed a one-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $825,000 through the 2024/25 season. Unfortunately, Kaliyev was placed on LTIR (Long-Term Injured Reserve) after breaking his collarbone during training camp in September 2024 before the start of the regular season, jeopardizing his future with the Kings.

Some critics might scrutinize coach Jim Hiller and call for more ice time for Kaliyev; However, it’s important to remember that he still needs to improve his two-way game and consistency to secure a starting spot in the squad.

Only time will tell if this move will revitalize his career.
