MLK Day and Inauguration Day fall on the same day. Here’s what’s closed

This year January 20th is celebrated for two reasons.

For the first time in 28 years, Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Day celebrations fall on the same day. This is the second time the dates have coincided.

When is Inauguration Day?

According to the constitution, Inauguration Day is set for January 20th. President-elect Donald Trump will take the oath of office at noon and return to the White House.

Trump is the second person, after President Grover Cleveland, to be elected president to non-consecutive terms.

When is MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Day is the third Monday in January and falls on January 20th this year.

When did MLK Day and Inauguration Day first fall on the same day?

MLK Day was first celebrated in 1986. The holiday and Inauguration Day were first brought together in 1997, when President Bill Clinton was inaugurated for his second term.

What is MLK Day?

The federal holiday honors the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist who dedicated his life to fighting injustice, inequality, poverty and war. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the holiday is typically celebrated with marches, parades, speeches by civil rights activists and politicians, volunteerism and special programs at museums and other cultural institutions across the country.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday “designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities,” according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
