Jimmy Carter’s funeral will take place on January 9th in Washington

Mr. Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, will be flown on a presidential plane to Washington on Tuesday, January 7, where he will be taken to the U.S. Navy Memorial in his honor for his service as Submariner. He will then be taken by horse-drawn caisson to the Capitol, where he will lie in state until January 8, as several presidents have done since Abraham Lincoln. Thousands of people are expected to come through the Rotunda to pay their respects, including lawmakers, diplomats and everyday Americans.

The highlight of the commemoration will be the service in the cathedral, which traditionally hosts state funerals for presidents and other major American figures. Other former presidents are expected to attend, but it was not clear whether President-elect Donald J. Trump, who has regularly denigrated Mr. Carter, would be invited or attend.

The military task force statement did not include a program for the ceremony at the cathedral, but others involved in the planning said that in addition to Mr. Biden, Jason Carter, the grandson of the former president and chief executive of the Carter Center, would also speak. as did Stuart E. Eizenstat, the former president’s domestic policy adviser.

Eulogies will also be read by two people who were close to Mr. Carter but have died: former President Gerald R. Ford, the Republican who was defeated by Mr. Carter in 1976 but later became a friend, and the former vice president Walter F. Mondale, vice president and partner of Mr. Carter. Mr. Ford died in 2006 and Mr. Mondale in 2021. The eulogies will be read by their sons, Steven Ford and Ted Mondale.

After the service, Mr. Carter will be returned to Georgia for burial. Original plans called for him to be transported by train, but Mr. Carter objected. “If you take my cold, dead body across the United States by train, I will haunt you until you die,” he told an employee. Instead, he will return to Georgia on a military flight.
