Significant impacts from winter weather are expected Friday morning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A First alert weather day starting late tonight and lasting through Saturday morning, making for an impressive winter weather event.

THE NEXT 24 HOURS:

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will begin over far western Alabama at midnight and continue from west to east into the early morning hours Friday. A blast of snow to the north could result in rapid accumulation of over an inch or two of snow in these areas; However, most accumulations across central Alabama will consist of more compact sleet and freezing rain. This will lead to deterioration in road conditions and dangerous driving. Expect the greatest impact early in the day.

Warm air advection will lead to cold rain late Friday morning. We may remain close enough to freezing in areas to the north and east that more freezing rain will accumulate there. It also gets quite windy, so there may be occasional power outages.

Friday evening and Saturday:

Persistent snow showers or thunderstorms are possible on Friday night. There is also sufficient drainage and residual moisture for patchy black ice. So while there will be heavier rainfall, expect the possibility of some travel disruption early Saturday.

THE WEEKEND:

After a cold start on Saturday with patchy black ice, highs will reach 37°C and sunshine. Conditions will improve on Saturday and dry weather will prevail for the remainder of the weekend. Lows will fall into the teens early Sunday morning.

NEXT WEEK:

The dry weather will continue until the middle of next week, with further freezing mornings. Towards the end of the week temperatures will begin to change, with a chance of rain again during the period from the 17th to the 20th. I still see signs of another significant cold snap in the long term and we need to be alert to the possibility of further wintry precipitation.
