‘Simpsons’ producer reveals ‘funniest’ prediction that came true

After decades of close predictions, “The Simpsons” producer David Mirkin reveals the one the writers never imagined would actually come true.

“Yes, predicting that Donald Trump would become president is still one of the funniest predictions we’ve ever made,” the 69-year-old told The Post exclusively at the Vulture Festival.

But Mirkin also has an all-time favorite prediction that he wouldn’t mind taking the Oval Office.

“I think Lisa is great as president,” he quipped, “and I still believe that will happen, so everyone can look forward to that!”

Why do they come true so often? Well, Mirkin wants viewers to know that there is a top secret reason.

“You know, that’s kind of a secret that I don’t tell everyone,” the producer joked with a serious face. “But people wonder, how do we do this, how do we make predictions… At various times, time travelers show up in the writers’ room, telling us things just to get the show going and mess with people’s minds, and it works perfectly !”

And Mirkin made it clear that there will never be a topic that the authors shy away from.

“We always try to pursue everything that’s important,” he admitted. “Everything that matters to people can be addressed with humor, compassion, empathy and incredible meanness all at the same time.”

“Everyone always has their own ideas, everyone has their own opinion and it’s all completely justified, except for those who don’t like the show – they’re wrong!”

With 32 seasons under his belt, having started with the animated series’ fifth season in 1992, Mirkin knows exactly what keeps fans coming back.

“It’s just an incredible desire from all of us at The Simpsons to keep making money. I think that creates a huge energy that attracts people because our greed is so powerful,” the comedy genius teased, smiling.

“It’s about a family and how families struggle and don’t function well,” the producer said seriously. “Everyone who has a broken family loves The Simpsons, and everyone has a broken family. So once again a very successful show!”

Is it going to continue? As Mirkin put it, “We’d like to do another 36 seasons, but the world won’t exist that long, so that’s the only sad part.” I mean, our next prediction will be the end of the world, but you’ll see – it’s coming!”

And for the many young writers out there who dream of working on a sitcom like The Simpsons, the director has some good advice.

“Get into something that actually pays better,” he quipped. “I feel so sorry for young writers. It’s much harder now than it was for me. It’s harder now and there are a lot of writers who have to take jobs outside of the industry while actually working on hit shows.

“The advice is you have to love it,” Mirkin said. “The way I got into it was that I had absolutely no other choice. I’m completely useless for anything other than that. So when you realize you’re completely useless in the world and can’t do anything but write comedy, that’s how you get there.”
