Australian Open: Aussie Watch – six in action on Day 4

The second round of the 2025 Australian Open is underway and six local hopefuls are attempting to advance to the third round.

Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Ajla Tomljanovic are among those hoping to keep their Slams alive. Follow the fate of all Australians here.

Margaret Court Arena, night event (from approx. 9:00 p.m.)

Paula Badosa (11) vs. Talia Gibson (AUS) (WC)

John Cain Arena, day session (not before 1:00 p.m.)

Jordan Thompson (27) (AUS) def. by Nuno Borges

3-6, 2-6, 4-6

A disappointing afternoon for the seeded Thompson in front of a large crowd at the John Cain Arena. As a seeded player there was always a little more pressure, but it was the Portuguese who handled it better.

Thompson only had a look at two break point chances throughout the match, but gave his opponent nine looks (and four breaks), while Thompson’s first serve percentage was 63% while Borges was at 77%.

After a positive year (particularly on hard courts) in 2024 that saw him reach the fourth round at the US Open and win in Los Cabos, Thompson’s Australian Open campaign will serve as something of a reality check.

John Cain Arena, evening event (not before 5:00 p.m.)

Jack Draper (15) vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS)

Aleksander Vukic (AUS) vs. Sebastian Korda (22)

3rd place, day session (from 11:00 a.m.)
