3 Vintage Items in Your Home That Are Actually Outdated

We can all agree that old and stylish are not usually synonymous, especially in a home. Take shag carpets and Formica, for example. We are very happy to have left this in the 70s. But there are plenty of exceptions (we’re looking at you, Silver Collection).

In a recent survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Realty ONE Group, 83% of respondents agreed that there is a fine line between “vintage” and truly “dated” when it comes to homes.

While there’s no science to distinguishing between items that are “vintage” or simply “dated,” we can agree on a few things.

According to the survey results, Generation Z, Millennials, Generation They also agree that there are three things that are outdated, no matter how well they are maintained:

  • Popcorn ceilings
  • Root cellar
  • Telephone corners

However, when it comes to other vintage details, the four generations have different opinions.

While Millennials are over “Millennial Grey,” 17% of Gen Z said it was their favorite trend. Baby boomers have officially declared the end of fully carpeted homes, but unlike younger generations, they are not yet ready to give up the “farmhouse chic” aesthetic. And the youngest cohort, Generation Z, is embracing vintage details like wallpaper, stained glass windows and wood paneling.

Fortunately, unlike removing a basement or telephone nook, removing popcorn ceilings is relatively easy. And don’t despair if your historic home has a telephone nook. This small niche intended to house a landline telephone can be transformed into a functional space for displaying plants and knick-knacks.
