AC Schnitzer’s fake BMW M2 police car is really cool

A new Essen Motor Show means AC Schnitzer has created another fake police car. This souped-up BMW M2 is part of the “Tune It!” program. Safe!” Initiative supported by the Federal Ministry for Digitalization and Transport in Germany. The nationwide campaign – with the support of the German police – is intended to promote tuning projects that comply with the regulations without compromising the safety of the occupants.

This G87 is essentially a typical BMW M2 from AC Schnitzer, but with a full body wrap designed to resemble a police car. To illustrate this, a light bar was installed on the roof and the tuner added LEDs into the kidney grille. There’s a radio and another light on the dashboard, as if the car wasn’t flashy enough.

Aside from the fake police car, the mods are very real. AC Schnitzer gave the rear-wheel drive coupé a body kit. Aside from making the M2 look meaner, the newly added parts also play a functional role by improving aerodynamics. The changes to the front have increased downforce by 60 kilograms. Changes to the tail add an additional 80 kg (176 lbs) after the addition of a massive wing.

Elsewhere, the compact sports car received a height-adjustable chassis that lowers the driving level by up to 35 millimeters. At 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear, the forged wheels are lighter than the original alloy rims. The new shoes have a copper finish, although AC Schnitzer calls it “TechGold.”

Underneath the bespoke engine cover with the largest M logo we’ve ever seen lies a reworked S58 engine. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six now produces 553 horsepower and 479 pound-feet (650 Newton-meters). AC Schnitzer was working on an M2 with an eight-speed automatic transmission instead of a six-speed manual transmission. This makes sense given the extra torque that the manual transmission has a hard time dealing with.

Not much has changed inside this M2, which is equipped with the optional carbon bucket seats. AC Schnitzer has generously used aluminum for the footrest, the shift paddles and the iDrive controller.

The car will be on display at the Essen Motor Show 2024 until December 8th. You can view it alongside the tuner’s M3 Touring and a MINI Cooper S (F66).
