New Jersey Weather: Latest snow forecast for storms on Thursday and Sunday

Our cold January could get a little snowy over the next few days, with a weak storm system expected to bring light snow showers on Thursday and another storm system possibly moving close enough to New Jersey to bring a few inches of snow on Sunday.

That’s the latest word from weather forecasters, who seem to agree that the Garden State will only see light snow Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

Less certain is the forecast for Sunday, which depends heavily on the exact direction of a possible coastal storm and the speed of the temperature drop.

Steven DiMartino, who runs the private weather forecasting company NY NJ PA, said some areas of our region are likely to see some snow late Sunday into early Monday, but no weather forecasts are certain at this time.

“Moderate snowfall is becoming increasingly likely for the I-95 corridor and coast,” DiMartino said in a video forecast.

He expects Sunday’s storm may be too distant for the interior parts of New Jersey and the Philadelphia metropolitan area to experience significant snowfall, but those areas could still see light snow.

That could have an impact on the Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff game on Sunday afternoon, he noted.

National Weather Service forecasters say Sunday’s storm may remain too far offshore to bring significant snow to the New Jersey region. Right now it’s more likely we’ll see “a little snow,” the agency said.

Based on the latest computerized models, there is only a 10% to 20% chance of 2 or more inches of snow falling, the weather service noted in its afternoon weather forecast.

Overall, the chance of at least some snow on Sunday is between 25 and 50%, “with the high end of that range being in areas south of Philadelphia.”

Snow forecast for New Jersey

Meteorologists say a winter storm could occur over the weekend that could bring snow to the New Jersey region from Sunday, January 19th through Monday, January 20th.AccuWeather

Some snow or a wintry mix could fall in New Jersey on Sunday, according to AccuWeather, but how much accumulates will depend on the direction of the storm.

The National Weather Service’s New York regional office, which covers the New York City metropolitan area and northeastern New Jersey, said Sunday’s storm is expected to develop into a weak low-pressure system that will move across the southeastern region of the U.S. and into the Mid-Atlantic region.

“There is some uncertainty as to how quickly and where the low will develop and eventually track, which will determine our (precipitation) type and the amount of precipitation the area receives,” the agency said.

The New York Weather Service office said two major computer-driven models – the European model and the Canadian model – are “more consistent with a low pressure system moving closer to the south, bringing with it a period of light rain/snow or a mix of both.” “Area where the (American) GFS (model) has a more suppressed and slower system that better tracks the departing cold front offshore through early Monday.”

The GFS model projects a storm track that runs too far south and east to bring snow.
