A longtime former mayor of California has died in a horrific car accident as he and his wife were on their way to visit family before Thanksgiving.

Mike Morgan, 77, was traveling with his wife, Donna Morgan, to visit their children in Reno, Nevada, on Tuesday when the accident occurred, Camarillo City Councilman Kevin Kildee said VC star.

The father of two and six-time mayor of Camarillo died, while his wife suffered “severe injuries,” he said.

The city of Camarillo released a statement on X Wednesday paying tribute to the former mayor.

“We are saddened to learn of a tragic car accident yesterday that resulted in the death of former City Council member and Mayor Mike Morgan and serious injuries to his wife, Donna,” it said.

Morgan has worked for Camarillo for 38 years, both as an elected official and through his involvement in several nonprofit and church ventures, the city said.

Morgan was born in Vernon, Texas, in 1947 before moving to Camarillo in 1961, his official biography states.

He graduated from Camarillo High School in 1965 before attending Ventura College at California State University, where he studied psychology. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Morgan pursued a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Southern California.

He then worked for the U.S. Department of Probation and as a consultant in housing and foreign trade before running for mayor.
