Our snow forecast for Sunday published

MY 10 THOUGHTS ON SUNDAY SNOW:

This “snow map” is my hand-drawn overall snow forecast. While this snow can be classified as a “Winter Storm” (snow totals 4+) for Northern Virginia, it is more of a “Winter Weather Warning” type snow for Central and Southwest Virginia.

Southside Virginia residents could see snow fall Sunday, although little to no snow accumulation is expected. This includes the Danville area.

This map does not take Saturday morning into account – there will be light snow in/near Bergen in the morning. Then, high temperatures will reach into the 40s, with 50 degrees within reach for central and southern Virginia. Enjoy the day!

Precipitation will begin as rain on Sunday morning. As temperatures cool in the morning and afternoon, the rain will gradually turn to snow.

It may snow for several hours in Lynchburg, Bedford, Roanoke and Farmville. I have accumulations of 1 inch or less. Some of you might get a little more if “banding” sets in

I’m not sure how much remains in central and southwest Virginia. I see that the asphalt has wet to slippery areas. I imagine I-81 from Lexington to Roanoke to Tennessee is slower than usual.

Road conditions will deteriorate to the west and north in the range of 1 to 3 inches. Including the mountains surrounding I-81 in southwest Virginia, Roanoke, Bedford, Amherst and Nelson. There will be less snow at lower altitudes.

Snow on roads will increase along and north of a line from Covington to Lexington to Charlottesville to near/north of Richmond. These include DC, Harrisonburg/Staunton and Hot Springs.

The snow will stop on Sunday evening. The snow that still lies on streets and yards will not begin to melt until the end of next week.

After the snowfall ends, temperatures will remain below freezing all day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The highs only reach the 30s.
