Closures and delays in West Michigan

With subzero temperatures and additional snowfall expected, many West Michigan counties will be closed Monday.

MICHIGAN, USA – Many schools in West Michigan have canceled classes for Monday due to freezing temperatures and snow.

On Sunday it started snowing on the lakeshore. Additional lake snow is expected to move further inland on Monday as westerly winds strengthen. This could result in up to 30 centimeters of snow in some areas.

Temperatures will struggle to rise above single digits. Since wind gusts of up to 50 km/h are expected, temperatures will feel like they are below zero during the day. These temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

Drivers should expect slippery roads and limited visibility. When the temperature drops below about 15 degrees, the effect of salt on the road is no longer as effective.

Early Monday morning, many West Michigan school districts canceled classes, including the following:

  • Grand Haven Area Public Schools
  • Allendale Public Schools
  • Coopersville Public School
  • Grandville Public Schools
  • Kalamazoo Public Schools
  • Spring Lake Public Schools
  • Schools in the Hastings area
  • Fennville Public Schoolsx

In many districts, no courses were planned for Monday to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday. Banks, post offices and some shipping services will suspend their operations for the day.
