Confirming ESPN’s recent reporting, Jake Fischer writes at The Stein Line (Substack link) that Brooklyn is demanding the price for the forward Cameron Johnson is indeed high and the team does not feel compelled to move him until February 6th.

According to Fischer, in their discussions with certain teams about Johnson, the networks were looking for up to two first-round picks for a young player. It remains to be seen whether a team will reach that price. If not, the question will be whether Brooklyn ultimately decides to make an in-season deal for a slightly more modest return or opts to keep Johnson into the offseason.

Here are a few more updates from Fischer on one of the NBA’s top trade candidates:

  • Following a report from The Athletic identifying this Cavaliers As for a team with interest in trading Johnson, Fischer says the interest appears to be “preliminary at best.” While Fischer confirms that Cleveland has inquired about Johnson, he is unsure if the Cavs have the resources to approach Brooklyn since they can only trade a first-round pick and that would not be traded until 2031. People around the league believe the Cavs have more. Fischer notes that they will likely make a small move that lowers their luxury tax bill.
  • Fischer is ready to cross the border thunder He was removed from the list of candidates for Johnson after he self-reported last month that Oklahoma City was keeping an eye on the Nets sharpshooter. While there is still talk around the league about the possible match between Johnson and OKC, there is no “credible evidence” that the Thunder have discussed a deal with Brooklyn, explains Fischer. Like the Cavaliers, given their success so far this season, the Thunder appear unwilling to make a significant move that would shake up their roster and disrupt the chemistry between them, Fischer adds.
  • The Pacemaker And Kings are among the teams that continue to be eyed as possible candidates for Johnson. A Western Conference executive who spoke with Fischer believes in a Sacramento package Kevin Huerter, Trey Lylesand a first-round pick is viewed by some people around the league as the first benchmark to beat. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Nets would accept this offer if it was the best they have at the deadline, but it sounds like it might be the best they have yet.
