Woman who died as a result of a road accident in Donegal has been named locally

A woman killed in a tragic road accident in Buncrana, Co Donegal has been named locally as Rose Byrne.

Ms Byrne, an 80-year-old woman from Mill Brae in the town, died in a collision between a car and two pedestrians last Tuesday afternoon.

Ms Byrne was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital following the collision but sadly died there on Sunday.

It is understood Ms Byrne (née Gallagher) was with a family member when the tragedy occurred on Lower Main Street, Buncrana.

Gardaí continue to appeal for any witnesses to the tragedy to come forward.

Road users who were traveling on Main Street, Buncrana between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday 14 January 2025 are asked to contact gardaí if they have any information or dashcam footage.

The coroner has been notified and an autopsy will be performed.

The late Mrs Byrne was the wife of Thomas Byrne and the beloved mother of John, Valerie, Stella, Dermot and Emer.

Ms Byrne’s son Dermot is a well-known musician and has played with a number of well-known artists including popular heritage band Altan, Sharon Shannon and The Stunning.

Mrs. Byrne was predeceased by her loving son Thomas and brothers Jim and Joe Gallagher.

Her death is deeply regretted and she will be forever missed by her loving husband, sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends and neighbors.

Her funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
