Half a foot of snow is expected for some of us

The first warning forecast from chief meteorologist Patrick Rockey

The first flakes are already falling in eastern North Carolina and more are on the way.

However, for most of us it will snow very quickly. The snow window is only about 3-4 hours. But because it’s so cold, snow should stick and accumulate immediately.

That window should open between 8 and 9 p.m. for most of us as light to moderate snow spreads across the region. This will be a dry, fluffy snow, not suitable for either snowballs or snowmen.

Snow will fall out of Hampton Roads in the early hours of the night. But in eastern North Carolina, the numbers continue to decline. Due to the very cold temperatures, the roads will be very slippery and messy.

The snow should end before dawn for all of us. However, thanks to a gusty northeasterly wind, we could see a few more bay effect snow showers.

We expect most of us to end up with 2 to 3 inches of snow, with totals lower in our northern communities and higher in the south, particularly eastern North Carolina.

And the cold air will stick around for a while, meaning the roads could be pretty unpleasant for a while. We fell below freezing around 6pm yesterday and will likely stay below freezing until midday Thursday. That’s 66 hours!
