Trade suggestion: New York Mets get 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr; Toronto Blue Jays get RHP Brandon Sproat (Mets #1, MLB #38)

Why it works for the Mets

As for the Mets’ review of Guerrero, the natural question is whether it was a vested interest or intended to put pressure on Alonso.

Whatever the case, it wouldn’t hurt for the Mets to reach out again if Alonso doesn’t end up with them or the Blue Jays.

Going from Alonso to Guerrero is as round-for-round a hole as it gets, although one could argue it would be a significant improvement for the Mets. Aside from home runs and runs batted in, Guerrero Alonso has beaten Alonso in every key category since 2021.

Is it worth sacrificing a year of Guerrero for the team’s best prospect? Since that would mean uniting Guerrero with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor to form a trio that could rival the one in Los Angeles, the vote here is obviously yes.

Why it works for the Blue Jays

This concept only works if the Blue Jays cannot win Alonso. And to be honest, that seems like a realistic outcome.

But if not, then that would just be a funny trade.

In exchange for one year of Guerreo, the Blue Jays would get at least six years of Sproat. The 24-year-old has risen quickly since the Mets selected him in the second round in 2023. With more than three pitches in his fastball, slider and changeup, he is considered a potential No. 2 starter.

That should pique Toronto’s interest. Because Chris Bassitt’s contract expires after this year and Kevin Gausman is only signed until 2026, they have to make a pitch soon.
