Important market update from Alex Bregman

A signing may not be imminent, but there seems to be a real chance that Alex Bregman ends up with the Red Sox.

Bregman has been linked to Boston in rumors since the end of the 2024 MLB season, but there haven’t been many concrete reports about the star third baseman in more than two months on the open market. But on MLB Network on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post offered perhaps the most significant insight into Bregman yet.

“Bregman is interesting,” Heyman said in “Hot Stove.” “I really think it will work out great for him because right now I hear there are five teams. I don’t know exactly who the five teams are, but it’s most likely the Red Sox. I understand that he would probably need to play second base and would be willing to do so. … I think he suits them. They didn’t achieve a great result signing at this point. … In my opinion, the most likely scenario right now is that they sign Alex Bregman.”

As Hyeman pointed out, Bregman’s willingness to play on the other side of the diamond is a better fit for Boston. The two-time World Series champion could bring stability to the club at a position that has seen a revolving door for years. Bregman also swings an effective right-handed bat that the Red Sox lineup could really use.

Add to that the 30-year-old’s history with Alex Cora, his championship history and his experienced leadership skills, and Bregman certainly fits the mold of the type of player that should pique the interest of Craig Breslow and Co.
