Patrick Mahomes on trying to draw a flag: ‘I probably shouldn’t have done that’

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes drew two questionable 15-yard penalties in Saturday’s win over the Texans, but his attempt to score a third by slowing down near the sideline and then falling to the ground as soon as he was touched was unsuccessful.

Mahomes confirmed in one interview with Carrington Harrison of 96.5 The Fan that it was correct that the officials didn’t throw a flag on that play and that he shouldn’t have tried to draw a penalty that way.

“I would say the only thing where I felt like I probably did too much was the play on the sideline where I didn’t get the flag,” Mahomes said. “The referees saw it and it wasn’t marked. I got it straight away and know I probably shouldn’t have done that.”

Still, Mahomes says the complaints about the administration are overblown.

“I learned that no matter what happens during the game, if you keep winning, something will come out of it,” Mahomes said. “I don’t really pay attention to it. Obviously I’ve been on both sides as far as the way I felt calls were being made. But at the end of the day, these guys do their best to make the best calls and make sure players make their plays, and that determines the outcome. Obviously there was a call here and there that people didn’t agree with, but at the same time I think there were a lot of other plays that decided the outcome of this football game.”

Many NFL fans feel that Mahomes and the Chiefs are getting preferential treatment from the officials, and that will lead to the officiating being scrutinized as the Chiefs face the Bills on Sunday and the trip to the Super Bowl is at stake.
