Seven on trial for Maccabi violence, one faces attempted murder

Seven men have been ordered to appear in court next month in connection with the violence before and after the Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv football match on November 7.

A 22-year-old man from the Eindhoven region faces charges of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and public order violations, the public prosecutor’s office said on Friday.

The six others, three from Amsterdam, the others from Monnickendam, Utrecht and The Hague, are accused of violent crimes on the day of the game or afterwards, as well as robbery, group insults and possession of fireworks. A man was accused of leaking information about the violence.

The cases of the seven people, aged between 19 and 32, will be heard in Amsterdam on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th. Five of them are currently in custody, the other two were released earlier.

Six more people will later appear in court in connection with the riots in Amsterdam a few days later. Three of them were minors, the public prosecutor said.

The prosecutor’s office also said it had received several formal complaints about attacks by Maccabi supporters on others and people who attacked Maccabi supporters.

Police are still analyzing footage of the riots and more arrests are expected. Three people were nabbed after TV shows of crime shows showed their blurry images.

Attacks

Five supporters of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv were taken to hospital after being attacked by what Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema described as: “Hit and runs“by “young people on scooters” after the Europa League game against Ajax.

The police have not yet stated how many people were attacked or how many incidents there were.

Police publicly arrested 62 people crimes On the day of the game itself, 10 of them were Maccabi fans.
