Governor Greg Abbott is ready to enable online sports betting in Texas.

In an exclusive interview for the podcast in Texas Take, Abbott said that he had no objections to Texas legislation that a law has passed to join 39 other countries that legalized online sports betting. He said he saw sports betting as part of the entertainment, professional football and other sports.

“I have no problem with online sports betting,” said Abbott in an interview in the governor’s villa. “The reality is that I would be shocked if there were no Texans who already do it.”

The comments are some of the governors’ strongest to support an industry that has strengthened their lobbying and political donations in recent years.

A coalition of Great Sport -Franchise -Franchise companies in the state, including the Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Astros and the San Antonio Spurs, have come together with sports playing companies such as Betmgm, Draftkings and Fanduel to urge legalized betting through Texas Sports Betting Alliance . They have hired more than a dozen lobbyists and used big names in politics and sport, such as: Former governor Rick Perry and Houston Rockets owner Tilman Ferttitta to make their place.

“We appreciate the governor’s comments because this repeats what we hear from Texans,” said Jeremy Kudon, President of the Sportwetting Alliance. “You want to vote on the legalization of sports betting and to create a strong, regulatory framework that protects consumers and increases the income in the state.”

In a video that advertises the broader effort, Perry said that many Texans already play on games through offshore websites, go to other states or to use other non -regulated agents. He said, that means that billions of dollars leave the state, and those who use these websites do not have the same protection as the legalization he would bring.

Ferttitta – In 2023, the Golden Nugget Hotels & Casinos has been part of the Golden Nugget of which, in 2023, publicly supported a legislative proposal in the legislature that would have made sports betting in Texas possible.

“Sports betting are a very popular form of entertainment. Sports fans like to enjoy bets on their favorite sports because they bring them closer to the team and bring them into play,” said Ferttitta.

In 2022, Draftkings Golden Nugget acquired online games in a deal that made Ferttitta a member of the DRAFTKING board.

Sports betting sides have been exploded since 2018 when the Supreme Court of the United States had depressed a federal law of 1992 that prevents most states from allowing it. In November, the voters in Missouri approved a ballot initiative that made them the 39th state to legalize sports games.

Texas was one of the holds, partly because the Texas constitution prohibits the expansion of gambling in Texas. In order to allow sports betting or expanding the casinos in Texas, the legislator would have to change the state constitution by preventing two thirds of the two chambers and then receiving a vote on the people.

In 2023 the problem came as far as ever. A bill from the state MP Jeff Leach, R-Plano, replaced the house with a vote of 82-51, but was never picked up by the Senate, where the greatest hurdles exist.

Senator Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, had proposed a similar legislative template in 2023, but never gained much momentum. The state of the state, Carol Alvarado, D-Houston, has reintroduced another legislative template this year, which enables an expansion of casinos to Texas and allows sports betting.

Challenges ahead

But this calculation has an ascent. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, a Republican from Houston who heads the Texas Senate, repeatedly said that he did not have enough Republicans in the Senate who support the idea. He said he rejected the topic to vote, unless the majority of the Republicans in the Senate was ready to support the draft law. He said that voters in Texas have chosen a majority of Republicans in the Senate, and he will not allow a draft law to pass on the opposition of most Republicans in the Senate.

The Republican Party in Texas has also shown itself against the expanded gambling on its official platform for a long time. A violation of this platform could lead to public reviews and the party campaign against members who vote for casinos.

Influent conservative groups such as the Texas Public Policy Foundation in Austin have published reports. While casinos and sports betting can lead to more tax revenue to finance the government, a Policy letter published by TPPF warned that this would lead to higher installments of gambling addiction.

Dave Forman, research director of the American Gaming Association, has used these concerns and argues that the problem with problems, despite the growth of the game options, continues to influence a small fraction of the population in recent decades.

Giles Kibbe, Executive Vice President and General Counsel des Houston Astros said that illegal sports betting in Texas is omnipresent and should be regulated.

“We are happy to hear that governor Abbott’s views of sports betting,” said Kibbe.

In 2022, Abbott opened the door for extended games of chance in Texas for the first time. During his re -election campaign, he said that he was ready to discuss that casinos in the state’s resort style allow.

His advocacy agreed, as great gambling interests, contributed to supporting his campaign for re -election. The deceased Las Vegas -Glückensglime -Tycoon Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam created Abbott in 2022 for his campaign for donations of 1.5 million US dollars, including a check of 1 million US dollar from Miriam Adelson Before Abbott’s victory.

In 2023, Miriam Adelson became the majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, which is part of the Texas Sports Bett Alliance.

Ferttitta, a native galveston, is also one of the largest donors from Abbott since his first campaign for the governor. Ferttitta has given Abbott more than 2.1 million US dollars for his campaigns since 2014. This includes that he can fly his personal aircraft to the campaign by the state.

Ferttitta was also an important donor of other important legislators in Texas. He donated over 1 million US dollars via Patrick’s earlier campaigns, including a donation of $ 100,000 in June.

Nevertheless, it was not enough to say goodbye to an invoice for extended casinos or sports betting. Despite public surveys that are generally supported. A Houston University published on Tuesday showed that 60% of Texans support the legalization of online sports betting. And 73% supported the legalization and expansion of casinos in Texas.
