The UN -AIDS agency says that HIV infections could increase worldwide if the United States drops support

Stephanie Sy:

The Bush Initiative is called Pepper or an emergency plan for the President of AIDS. It was the greatest health commitment of a nation to combat a single illness. It saved 25 million lives.

But the reductions of the Trump government in foreign aid have thrown this initiative into a tail spin. A few days after the White House had announced that it held foreign help for 90 days, the Foreign Ministry granted a waiver that enables the continuation of the life -saving HIV treatment. However, global supporters of health say that the exemptions are not adequately implemented and do not deal with the prevention efforts.

With me to discuss this shift in HIV financing, Angeli Achrekar, a deputy executive director at Unaids, is a deputy executive director, who coordinates the global fight against AIDS and provides services in 55 countries.

Angeli, thank you for joining the “news hour”.

I would like to start with freezing this foreign help in relation to the global fight against HIV-AIDS.

Angeli Achrekar, deputy managing director of the United Nations program for HIV/AIDS: The people who are most affected by this freezing.

These are the people we are talking about. This includes mothers, babies, fathers, adults. These are 20.6 million people for life -saving services. These are the most affected people.
