The researchers have not determined why this fish appeared near the surface, but some scientists speculate that some people of the species sometimes rise to the surface during the surface El Niño weather event that reduces the amount of cold water off the coast of North America.

The marine biologist Laia Valor, who was also part of the Shark Expedition, told the EFE news agency: “We returned to the port when I saw something black in the water that didn’t look like plastic or rubble. She added: “There could be thousands of reasons why it was there.

After the fish had died, the researchers brought it to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (Muna) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the body is further examined in order to promote knowledge about this difficult species.

Despite a large mouth full of sharp teeth, the humpback anglerfish carries a bacterial, organic -laden bait on the head to gain and catch prey in the dark area in which it lives.
