Two astronauts that are still stranded at the International Space Station (ISS), including the Sunita L. Williams in Massachusetts, may be at home earlier than expected.

The astronauts have been stuck in the ISS since June due to problems with the starliner of their space Boeing.

The problems included helium leaks in the drive system and the failure of five engines. According to NASA, four of the engines were restored and one was eliminated for the rest of the mission.

Williams has a connection to Cape Cod. Her sister lives in Falmouth and works in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Williams also ran twice in space twice in space – on a treadmill on board the ISS.

When is the new return date?

NASA stated that the new date is on March 12, 2025.

The original return date was mid -June 2024, but after the last delay in December the mission was to return until April 2025.

Boeing’s Starliner left the earth on June 5, 2024 in a mission that should only be short. The mission was originally planned for eight days, but the return was delayed three times.

Was expected that the extended stay affects the astronauts?

Many missions space station last six months, with some of them reaching a whole year. The delay will not physically violate the two astronauts, said Dr. Simeon Barber from Open University to BBC News.

“I am sure that they are already disappointed that they would miss Christmas at home with the people,” Barber told BBC News in December. “But that’s only two months left on an already quite long mission, and I am sure that if you ask you, you would tell you for sure that the space station is where you love it.”

Where does Sunita Williams come from in Massachusetts?

Williams sees her hometown as a neede. According to NASA, she completed the Needham High School in 1983.
