$700,000 saved per farm: Laser bird repellents protect fish farms in Mississippi

Mississippi’s aquaculture industry faces a daunting challenge as great egrets threaten fish stocks and endanger farms worth $700,000 each. In response, innovative laser bird deterrent technology comes to the rescue.

The AVIX Autonomic Mark II, a laser bird deterrent system, has become very popular among fish farmers because it uses green light to disrupt the behavior of birds and effectively deter them from the environment without causing them harm. Distributed by In-Situ Environmental and developed by Bird Control Group, these lasers are used at leading fish farms in Mississippi, including Bear Creek Fisheries and Harvest Select Catfish.

Bear Creek Fisheries, known for raising fingerlings and food-grade fish, has struggled with herons disrupting feeding routines. According to spokesman Andy Jones, “Birds eat 10 to 15 percent of our fish each year, driving up costs significantly.”

Harvest Select Catfish, besieged by thousands of herons, faced massive fish losses and financial strain. Jonathan Henderson, farm manager, explained: “We estimate a loss of 10%, which equates to $750,000 or more worth of fish.”

Both companies have successfully used AVIX Autonomic Mark II laser bird deterrents and achieved remarkable results. Henderson noted, “Thanks to these lasers, we have seen an 80-90% decrease in bird presence this year.”
