Champions Trophy 2025 – Cooper Connolly replaces Matt Short as India’s spinners for Australia

Cooper Connolly was called to the Australia’s Champions Trophy squad after Matt Short was excluded by injuries when they prepare for a try by spin in the semi-finals against India.

In short, a quad injury to Afghanistan and would have had no time to recover for the Knockout games.

Connolly, the 21-year-old left-hander and the left gun spinner, was a traveling reserve with the squad, so it will be available immediately. He only played three Odis, but could be taken into account directly in the selection because Australia has lost shorts offspin.

If the selectors opt for a line of opening batteries, Jake Fraser-McGurk is the replacement dough, while they want to have another specialist spin-bowler that they could consider, to involve the balance of the attack and including Tanveer Sangha.

Fraser-McGurk, who was a replacement for Mitchell Marsh himself, has to fight in his seven Odis with 98 runs at 2 p.m. and looked susceptible when the new ball moves, but the selectors still see him as a player who can take over the power play.

If Fraser-McGurk is not the route introduced by the selectors, someone has to go up from the middle order to fill the role of short, possibly those in the form of Josh Inglis.

Australia learned that their opponents for the semi -finals on Tuesday will be India in Dubai when New Zealand was played in the last group game.

Both teams in group B, which qualified – Australia and South Africa – traveled to Dubai so that the team that faced India had time to prepare. South Africa will now return to Lahore to be her semi -finals against New Zealand.

“We obviously had a hectic schedule and played a few games between the cities in Pakistan, but I think with the nature of this tournament,” said Legspinner Adam Zampa.

Zampa is a crucial figure for Australia in the semi -finals in a floor that supported the spinners. India used 37.3 over Spin against New Zealand, with Varun Chakravarthy 5 for 42, although there were also some early support for the quicks when Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson worried the top order of India.

Australia was worried from Sri Lanka’s spinners in her two odis in Colombo in front of the Champions Trophy.

“It changes a little,” said Zampa about the conditions between Pakistan and Dubai. “Potentially slower lower gates, so there may be the possibility to create a few more chances that we will see.”

Zampa added that he had the feeling that his own bowling had improved after returning 2 for 64 against England and 2 for 48 against Afghanistan.

“Personally, I don’t believe that I completely get around my best bowl, but I like to think that the beauty is on me when I am not quite of my best and not so big that my ability is still helping and taking these big gates,” he said.

“I obviously work on some things at the moment to hopefully return to my best, but as I said, the ability to still do a job for the team and get these big gates is still there that is really important to me.”

The last time that Australia was opposed to India in an ODI, was the final of the Odi World Cup 2023. If you win this time, you will return to Lahore to the final, otherwise it will be staged in Dubai.
