How can you attach your Christmas tree to your vehicle?

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The holiday season is just around the corner and Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials want you to make sure your Christmas tree comes home safely.

“Christmas trees that are not properly secured to your vehicle put you and other motorists at risk of a serious accident,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Trees could fly into the air and hit other vehicles. They could also land on the roadway and pose a danger to everyone.”

A 2019 study by AAA found that road debris from unsecured loads was responsible for more than 200,000 accidents, 19,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths over a four-year period. Debris from unsecured loads not only poses a safety risk, but also contributes to roadway trash, which costs Mississippi more than $3 million to clean up each year. Motorists who litter can face fines of up to $500 and up to six months in prison.

Whether your tree was freshly cut from a Christmas tree farm or purchased from a retailer, you can transport it safely by following these tips:

  • Use the correct vehicle. Christmas trees can be securely attached to roof racks. You can also use the bed of a truck or the interior of an SUV or van.
  • Secure the tree at several points along the trunk with strong rope or nylon straps. Remember to bring your own straps as existing straps may not be strong enough.
  • Face the bottom of the trunk toward the front of the vehicle.
  • Secure loose branches with a net, rope or twine.
  • Always double-check the load to make sure it is safe before setting off.
  • Drive slowly. Higher speeds create air resistance, which can cause lashing straps to fail.
