Could Darian Devries be a one and herd in West Virginia?

For a few weeks now there have been a lot of inaccurate reports that may be better classified than “rumors” in terms of this. West Virginia Men’s chef coach Darian Devries.

But now that the Iowa Hawkeyes made the decision to part with Fran McCafrey, it is time to address the elephants in the room – Devries’ future in West Virginia.

Due to Devries’ connections to the state and the university, it is easy to see why it would be one of the first names for the opening. His name will populate every single “Hot Board” that refers to the Iowa job. He is out of the state and his brother Jared played football for the Hawkeyes in the 90s.

While it may be taken into account by Iowa, it will take a lot for a step to happen. And no, I don’t quite exclude it, there are only other challenges that the Hawkeyes should be ready to keep the Devries away from the WVU. If Devries leaves before the end of April 2028, he owes WVU 37.5% of his remaining salary.

Wren Baker is a clever guy. He knows how good a trainer Devries is and understands that others will sniff around to see if a step is possible at all. A contract extension and/or a salary increase will probably already be discussed on the university’s website.

Iowa will owe McCafrey a little more than $ 4 million and of course has to buy out his coaching team, provided the new trainer does not keep anyone. In order to pour away Devries from Morgantown, depending on the high WVU, the bar will take around 3.5 million US dollars.

In addition, Ben McCollum is ironically the type that Darian Devries replaced in Drake, from Iowa City, Iowa. He will be one of the top candidates for a number of schools, and Iowa probably doesn’t want to have him pushed to another school in the big ten like Indiana. The buyout would be significantly cheaper and would be a much easier field than trying to leave a man a Power Four job after just a year in which he has already built some swing.

The other thing that works in favor of West Virginia is that Devries was not a big job in his career. He stayed as an assistant in Creighton for 17 years before taking over the Drake head coach. In the past he gave other opportunities and made sure that it was the right job for him when he made the switch to the Power Four.

Devries-to-iowa could certainly happen, but to this day there is nothing concrete that indicates that a step is taken into account. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully and present updates if necessary.
