Frederick County, Md. – Frederick County starts a new childcare study after County Leader warned of a critical lack of care.

This new study builds on a report last year, in which a serious lack of licensed providers in the county was found.

The county noted:

If current trends apply, the ratio of children per licensed slot will approach the crisis level in the next decade.

In a prominent example, the Frederick Community College Willsoon closed his preschool after 30 years, which enrolled 69 children.

The FCC President Annesa Payne Cheek said that “in today’s financially strict environment at federal, state and local level, every company that receives repeated financial losses must be assessed critically”.

The district’s department for family services will now consider the state of childcare for children up to 12 years and not just for small children.

In a press release, director Kelli Goetz said that “families in Frederick County continue to struggle with limited childcare options, high costs and a lack of available slots.”

The study includes surveys, focus groups and interviews with parents, providers, community groups and others.
