This is how much a 5 year old Kawasaki Ninja H2 is worth today

When it was released almost a decade ago, the Kawasaki Ninja H2 changed the one-liter class segment forever. Adding a supercharger to an already very powerful inline four-cylinder engine completely redefined what we all thought the performance benchmark was. In short, it became the benchmark overnight.

By 2019, the few existing flaws had been addressed and the bike received its final (possibly last?) update. Even by today’s standards, this is a tremendously powerful motorcycle that laughs in the face of other 200 horsepower superbikes. It may not be able to keep up with them on the track, but few bikes come close on the straights. The fact that you can have something like this at a good price is just great.

All information displayed here comes directly from Kawasaki. The opinions, however, are our own. Buying a used motorcycle always involves a certain amount of risk. Please do your research and proceed with caution.

An achievable future classic

As with most high performance motorcycles of this type, some owners ride these bikes quite hard. But it’s not quite as heavy as other more track-oriented liter bikes. However, there is a strong possibility that the previous owner took the bike to a drag strip, an abandoned airstrip, or an unknown location in “Mexico.” Occasional high-speed riding is exactly what this motorcycle was designed for, but overuse of this addictive speed can cause additional wear and tear.

So get an idea from the previous owner or dealer. If the deal seems too good to be true, something could be wrong. Because this is a low volume seller, prices vary. For bikes with no service history or higher mileage, expect to pay around $18,000, while Garage Queens sell for closer to $24,500. What you really want is something in the middle, preferably with above average mileage but with a service record. For reference, a new 2025 Ninja H2 costs $32,700. This means that even at around $22,000, you’ll save a lot of money.

Maintenance records are critical

Kawasaki has done a fantastic job designing this little supercharger, and the maintenance is actually nowhere near as bad as some supercharged cars. However, much more important and even more important than regular maintenance is the type of fuel used in these bikes. As with many high-performance motorcycles, premium fuel is a must. The ideal would be to test drive the bike, but at the very least you should ask the seller to start the bike.

If it has trouble starting or sputters when accelerating, it could be a sign of poor fuel selection. But don’t confuse this with the sharp throttle grip typical of most modern motorcycles, which tend to run lean. You’d think people would never put cheap gas in a bike like this, but once you realize how thirsty it is, you can somewhat understand why something like this might have happened. Expect to refuel regularly, and even more regularly if you have a heavy right wrist.

What you should know before buying a Kawasaki Ninja H2R

The Ninja H2R is a rocket on two wheels and not for the faint of heart

The 2019 model was affected by a recall, and it is a major recall. Some motorcycles had a defective timing chain tensioner, which could obviously lead to valve train damage. On a high performance engine like this this can be pretty disastrous if left unchecked. This wasn’t a widespread problem, but it’s worth confirming that the work was carried out when it was required. Otherwise, the owners have not reported any worrisome issues.

We may have said it before, but it bears saying again: buying a bike with no service history could get you a bargain price. However, the risk is not worth the reward. The care documents are just as important here as with an Italian Thoroughbred. While the heat generated by a turbocharged engine is not as demanding, it does put a lot of strain on the oil and using old (or the wrong) oil in that engine will ultimately cause problems.

A look at the 2019 Kawasaki Ninja H2

Super-charged fun for the masses

With the H2 it always came down to performance. It was designed from the ground up with this compressor in mind, so the engineering for this compressor was integrated into the design. It is continuously supplied with oil and driven by a chain, not a belt as is common in the automotive world. Plus, it runs on relatively low boost pressure and doesn’t produce enough heat to justify an intercooler. At least that’s what the engineers will say. The main reason, however, is that the addition of water cooling would have made the already complex design even more complex. Reports from the field suggest that it will still be quite hot. So it is not a motorcycle designed for touring use. For this, Kawasaki has a special H2 SX hypertouring bike that you can buy. Or even naked: the Z H2.

Given the complex technology and the need for certain technical parts, it was always too heavy for a real track bike. Like so many Speed Queens before it, this one was designed to be the fastest street legal motorcycle. This is proven by a high-speed run without a speed limiter on the Bonneville salt flats (video above). These crazy technologies include custom-designed aerodynamic bodies, a range of electronic aids and a special single-sided swingarm.
