Carlos Sainz delivers beyond the expectations of Williams – James Vowles beyond expectations

Carlos Sainz has only achieved one point since he came to Williams from Ferrari, but team boss James Vowles says that the Spaniard already delivers expectations and they are paid more than them.

The former champion Williams is fifth in front of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend and their 19 points of three races are more than the 17 that they have taken from all over the past year.

While Thai teammate Alex Albon was the main contribution with three consecutive top 10 positions, said Vowles’ that the influence of 30-year-old Sainz was clear from the start.

“I think we’ll get more than I paid (him),” said the Brit, adding that the performance in the car and the car could be rated.

“Our car has a completely different kind of adaptation than the Ferrari. It arrives there,” said Vowles. “He will be on the money shortly.

“Thanks to the work and effort, the car is faster and how it really develops with the engineers.

“That’s why Carlos was my destination number one. It is because he is absolutely brilliant in developing teams, and he already brings it to the table.”

Sainz, a four-time racing winner with his fifth Formula 1 team, came to Williams after losing his place at Ferrari against the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

His only point came in China after being disqualified from the 13th when the two Ferraris were disqualified as Pierre Gasly from Alpine.

Vowles described the Spaniard as a “part -time strategist”, a team player whose tactical nous and support for Albon also contributed to their success.

“He has no policy in him at all. He just wants the team to be faster,” he added.

The boss said that Albon, who qualified in the top 10 in every race, was undoubtedly a better driver than last season when Williams ended the ninth campaign of the 10 teams.

“You have seen one step from him every year, and this year he really doesn’t make a foot wrong. I can’t blame anything he does,” he said.

“It’s absolutely about the money in terms of delivery. He knew that he had to violate Carlos in the car, and he has it.”
