Tommy Helms passes – MLB trading rumors

Former NL rookie of the year and long -time Big Leaguer Tommy Helms Death today at the age of 83. From 1964 to 1977, Helms played in 14 seasons with the red, Astros, pirates and red Sox and led the red in the seasons 1988-89 in 64 games.

Helms broke into the show with two games with two games with Cincinnati in the 1964 season and 21 more games in 1965. Mainly a shortstop in the minor, Helms from Reds Shortstop Leo Cardenas was blocked in the position, and it took a few years for the Reds to find Helms to find the second basic position. Helms ended in 1966 as the third Baseman and was an immediate success. He then slipped on the second basis next year when Rose was moved to the left field, and Helms held the keystone from 1967 to 1971 in Cincinnati.

In this five-year route, Helms made two all-star teams and won two golden gloves for his work in the second base. In November 1971, however, the Reds, as part of an eight player blockbuster, who is one of the most important shops in Cincinnati-Baseball history, transferred to the Astros. The end of the Red trade included the future Fielder Center Field player Cesar Geronimo, the rotational stall Jack Billingham and (most), Joe Morgan, the future Femer-Hall-Hall-Hall-Hall-Famer, probably the best second Baseman in baseball history.

In his next three seasons in Houston, Helms continued to record solid offensive and defensive numbers before his production fell off in 1975. He played part-time in 1976-77 with the Pirates and Red Sox to complete his career as a player. Over 1435 games and 5337 record appearances met Helms with 34 home runs and 414 runs .269/.300/.342.

After Helms retired to Cincinnati in 1983 as a trainer as an infield instructor and first basic coach. From 1983 to 1989 he stayed under three different reds managers in the staff and became an interim manager twice because his old teammates Rose, then the Reds Skipper, controversies. Helms took over the shelter when Rose was suspended 30 games in 1988 due to the push of a referee, and became an interim manager again when Rose accepted his lifelong prohibition of baseball in 1989. After this season, Helms pulled out of the Reds after this season to manage one last time in the Cubs Farm System for a year and departed one year in the independent division in 2000-01 for a year.
