Henry Hurd not only spoke on behalf of the student athletes, but he also had to go after the legend of Denver Broncos John Elway.

It seems that it went well.

“To be honest, it was crazy,” Hurd recalled on Wednesday of the banquet in Denver. “A little moment that was pretty crazy was when I went out of the bathroom and he came in, and he goes:” Hey, Henry “and I was:” Oh my god, he knows my name. “And he said:” Nice speech “. And I said:” Thank you, man. “That was a cool moment.”

Hurd, senior at the Aspen High School, and William Daniel, a senior at the Basalt High School, were two of 17 student athletes from all over the state who were honored by the Colorado chapter The National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame during their scholar athlete prices on Monday evening from Denver West Marriott.

This was the 32nd Annual class, which ends in 1992 from his charta. During this time, no other student athletes had been recognized by Roaring Fork Valley before Hurd and Daniel.

“It was really cool that we both could be recognized,” said Daniel on Wednesday. “It was really cool to see how Elway spoke and get a few pictures and sign some things from him.”

According to the official program, the Colorado chapter of one of its main goals has the desire to “recognize the top athletes of the state’s high school soccer sports enthusiasts and to honor men who have identified themselves in the field, in the classroom as well as in extracurricular and in community activities in which management sources are exhibited.”

Hurd’s awards outside the field have certainly emerged, which is why he was selected to speak in the name of the others. A signatories from the Brown University-DAS derive offers from Notre Dame and Northwestern-Hat an average of 4.71 even in the autumn semester. He achieved a perfect 36 on the act.

“It was one of the coolest things I was in,” said Hurd about the banquet on Monday. “It goes to the top football players in the state, who are also good students and parishioners. Pretty much everyone at big DI schools, such as Nebraska, State San Diego, etc. It was pretty cool to meet all of these children.”

The western slope has honored a handful of the history of the Colorado chapter, but it is only a few. Two rifles – Mitch (2005) and Ryan Moeller (2012) – were recognized, and Greg Holloran from Steamboat was part of the 1993 class. Battle Mountain has two (Chris Jackson and Park Robbins), but has so far been recorded the Roaring Fork Valley.

Daniel, who was left for the Bethel University of Division III in Minnesota, held a 4.23 GPA until the autumn semester and this year was the finalist for the Denver Post Gold Helm Award.

His favorite part of the ceremony on Monday was perhaps that Carl Frerichs, the long -time BHS soccer coach, met one of his idols in Elway who was the spokesman.

“Frerichs is a big fan of Elway and a huge Bronco fan. So it was really cool for him to see him and take a picture with him,” said Daniel. “A certain recognition in the field is really cool, but at the end of the day the football will be over at some point, so that the work morality that you have on the soccer field and are able to translate it into the classroom and to be successful in the classroom, which is not able to do many athletes.”
