Warning: This article contains spoilers for the 2024 finale The Great British Baking Show.

The coveted cake stand trophy has a new owner.

After a season full of demanding baking challenges, mysterious illnesses, and the series’ first “Paul Pat” (a gesture given by judge Paul Hollywood to contestants who… almost earn his handshake of approval), the 2024 Great British baking show The series ended with a historic winner.

On Friday, November 29, the Netflix-distributed series released the 2024 season finale and at the end revealed the new champion: 34-year-old Georgie Grasso. The pediatric nurse from Carmarthenshire, UK, is the first winner of the competition series from Wales in 15 years.

After nine episodes of themed competitions – from cakes and chocolate to bread and pastry – the original twelve participants dwindled down to three talented amateur bakers. Grasso secured the crown after facing off against finalists Dylan Bachelet and Christiaan de Vries.

Hollywood and Prue Leith judge in the final. asked the bakers to tackle three baking projects: the Signature Challenge (this time it was the classic British scones), a Technical Challenge (where the bakers are given a new recipe to prepare on site – and for this episode, it was an afternoon tea spread) and a final challenge where Grasso, Bachelet and de Vries created hanging, layered cakes.

It was her gravity-defying lemon elderflower cake with strawberry champagne confit that secured Grasso the victory.

After hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding announced Grasso’s win, the humble home baker found it hard to believe in her victory. “This is crazy! I won it, I can’t believe it. This is simply incredible. I can’t believe I won The Great British Bake-Off” she said.

American audiences on Netflix and Roku know the show as The Great British Baking Showbut in the UK the show is broadcast under its original name, The Great British Bake-Off.

Despite their disbelief, the judges maintained their faith in Grasso.

“Georgie did what she does best. “Classic British baking, beautifully done, and I won, and rightly so,” remarked Leith in the final.

Hollywood agreed: “This is a very special cake, full of flavor and full of life. The Welsh wonder, Georgie, drove it crazy.”

The significant victory did not come about without sacrifice, Grasso explained afterwards. “I worked around the clock and sacrificed time with the children and family. “I’m just so proud of myself for proving that I can do it,” she said.

“I’m already sad that I won’t be able to come back here and see everyone… the people I met will be best friends for life.” “This is the best thing I’ve ever done,” Grasso said.

Grasso reflected on her win in more detail in a celebratory Instagram post shared on November 26 (the day the final aired in the UK), writing about overcoming her learning disability.

“Words cannot describe this feeling. “As a woman with ADHD who has struggled my entire life to fit in and finish everything I’ve ever started, I can’t believe I’ve overcome a lifetime of struggles,” she wrote, adding advice for other people struggling with similar learning and mental health issues. “To those of you who are neurodivergent, have self-doubt, and are struggling with your mental health. I want to say this: These moments of struggle are not forever, your differences make you powerful and strong. You can do absolutely anything you want if you put your mind to it, I’m proof of that. Believe in yourself, love who you are no matter what.”

Grasso not only thanked her participants (“I adore you all!” she wrote about the eleven other bakers), but also thanked the hosts, the jury and the team.

“Working with Paul, Prue, Alison and Noel was an absolute dream and an honor. You truly are some of the best people ever and I hope we see each other again soon!” she wrote. “To the production team and crew, you were like family to all of us and I know none of us will forget you!”
