Torchlight vigil held for murder victim Harshita

A torchlight march and vigil was held in memory of a 24-year-old woman who police believe was murdered by her husband.

Harshita Brella is believed to have been killed by her husband in Corby, Northamptonshire, before her body was found in a car in east London.

On Friday evening a large crowd gathered for the walk from Corby Boating Lake to Corby Cube.

“Serious crimes like this are very, very rare in Corby so this has hit us hard,” said Lou Cory, who organized the vigil.

“We have always been a community with one spirit.

“We definitely want to send a message to (Harshita’s family) to say that we also mourn them – and their loss – and that we feel sorry for them at this time when they are so far away have.”

A local arts group read a poem dedicated to Ms. Brella and a representative from a domestic violence service in Northampton addressed the crowd.

Surinder Bhoday, 74, has lived in Corby for 51 years.

“(Harshita) lived here and it is just a small town, so we want to pay our respects to her,” he explained.

“It’s so sad that it’s happening on our doorstep.”

Earlier on Friday, Northamptonshire Police announced that Ms Brella’s body would be repatriated to India.

The suspect, Parkaj Lamba, 23, is said to have fled the country.

He was previously arrested on September 3rd after Ms Brella reported domestic violence and a Domestic Violence Protection Order was issued against her.

Northamptonshire Police referred her to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following their previous contact with her.
