Car jumps over curb and crashes through base in Newtown village

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A woman escaped injury Friday morning when her car left the road, jumped the curb and crashed through a support pillar in front of Oishi and Body Works 20 in the Village at Newtown Shopping Center.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. during a busy Black Friday at Eagle Road Shopping Center. The black Audi with foreign license plates came to a stop just inches from the building after crashing through the pier, with much of it landing on the hood of the car.

The Newtown Township Police Department, Newtown Fire Rescue and Newtown Ambulance Squad responded to the scene.

“I jokingly said, ‘Oh, did someone crash their car into the building?’ One of the customers looked out the window and said, “Yes, they actually did.”

“My manager ran out of the store first and I followed him shortly after to make sure everything was OK,” the employee said. “At this point the lady was already getting out of the car.”

According to witnesses at the scene, the driver appeared to be shaken but not seriously injured in the accident. It was not immediately known whether she had suffered any injuries.

Firefighters were on site for more than three hours and used rescue equipment to free the car from the rubble. The car was eventually removed from the scene by Bethman Auto Center.

The extent of the damage to the shopping center building was not immediately known. Apparently the vehicle was badly damaged on the front section.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
