Solo leveling‘s new film, -reawakening-is a big moment for fans of Sung Jinwoo’s story. What storylines do the first two episodes of Solo Leveling Season 2 cover?

Season 1 begins with a short but fast-paced story arc and intense action

ReawakeningThe first half consists of a detailed summary of Solo leveling Season 1. It then ends with Jinwoo completing the job change quest, just like in the Season 1 finale, after which the film goes straight into the first episode of Season 2. With the first two episodes of season 2, Reawakeningcovers the entire Red Gate arc of the manhwa. This covers chapters 46 to 55 in the manhwa and begins right where Season 1 left off. This storyline follows Jinwoo as he enters a C-rank gate on a routine mission with the White Tiger Guild.

Jinwoo also asks his sister’s boyfriend, Songyi, to join the raid against him, hoping to show her how difficult a higher-ranked dungeon can be in order to scare her away from working as a hunter. They are also accompanied by A-rank Hunter Kim Chul, a supremely confident tank who leads the raid. Once the group enters the gate, it turns into a Red Gate and traps the entire raid group inside. As Jinwoo reveals, a Red Gare leads to “another world” that is “blocked by all outside forces.” The only way for the party to leave the dungeon is to either clear the dungeon or wait until there is a dungeon break. In order to clear the dungeon more quickly, Kim Chul puts together an “assault team” to help him pursue the boss, while Jinwoo stays behind with the rest of the group’s weaker hunters.

In the dungeon, the group is attacked by polar bears, yetis and – worst of all – ice elves. While Jinwoo is able to keep his group alive, Chul’s strike force is not as lucky. After Chul narrowly escapes and finds Jinwoo’s group thriving, he blames Jinwoo for his strike group’s death and attacks the Shadow Monarch. Left with no choice, Jinwoo orders Igris to kill Chul and then raises Chul to be the newest member of his Shadow Army under the new title “Iron”. In the end, with Iron’s help, Jinwoo is able to kill the dungeon boss and those who remained with him leave the Red Gate with their lives.

While a lot happens at the Red Gate, the overall story arc is quick enough that it fits comfortably into the two intended episodes that make up the second half of the film Reawakening Film. In the manhwa, this leads quite smoothly into the Demon Castle arc, where Jinwoo is shown driving home after the attack. Jinwoo uses this ability to raise a number of dungeon monsters to become his servants, but in the Red Gate he uses this ability in a particularly unethical way: to raise a human to join his army.

After successfully escaping the gate, Jinwoo reflects on the events at the Red Gate and what he learned about his powers. While Jinwoo failed to use Arise on Igris on his first attempt during the job change quest, he managed to pull it off in the end. This is in contrast to Barca, the boss monster of the Red Gate and leader of the Snow Elves. Try as he might, Jinwoo couldn’t turn Barca into a shadow soldier in the three attempts provided by the system.

This forced Jinwoo to confront the harsh truth that he might just not be strong enough yet. Although Jinwoo defeated Barca, a key factor in his victory was the fact that his shadow soldiers – and especially the newly promoted Iron – were there to help. Had Jinwoo fought Barca alone, he may not have actually won, which was probably the reason why he was unable to subdue Barca and join their army. Jinwoo had come a long way from being merely an E-rank, considered the weakest hunter in the world, but he still wasn’t quite an S-rank.

“Reawakening” ends with a purely anime scene that illustrates the anime’s greatest strength

The anime did an excellent job of fixing one of the manhwa’s biggest flaws: Jinwoo’s character arc. While the anime has remained faithful to the source material, it has continued to add additional scenes that expand Jinwoo’s character and make him more realistic and relatable. In the manhwa, Jinwoo is shown driving home on the night of the Red Gate, and the scene immediately shows him meeting up with Jinho the next day. In contrast, the end of Reawakening consists of a short additional scene showing Jinwoo after he arrives home that evening.

In it, Jinwoo laments his failure to turn Barca into one of his shadow soldiers, although he notes that he didn’t walk away completely empty-handed. At least he has gained a powerful new ally: iron. The scene then shows Jinwoo looking in the bathroom mirror as if he’s literally contemplating who he’s become in the midst of everything that’s happened. With his final words in the film, Jinwoo solemnly muses, “That makes three times.” This “third time” refers to the fact that the Red Gate was the third time that Jinwoo had to kill another human during a routine mission inside the gate (the first was Hwang Donsuk’s gang and the second Kang Taeshik).

This additional scene not only adds something special to Jinwoo’s personal arc, but also makes for a more dramatic ending to the film. It shows that Jinwoo struggles with his humanity as he not only constantly finds himself in situations where he has to kill another human, but also becomes numb to it. Furthermore, shortly before the fight against the Ice Elves, Barca even remarked that Jinwoo was not the same as other people. When monsters encounter humans, they can usually hear voices telling them to kill the humans. However, when Barca met Jinwoo, he didn’t hear the same voices.
