Ranking the biggest Iron Bowls of the Nick Saban era

When the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers meet in the Iron Bowl on Saturday afternoon, there will be a glaring omission in the rivals’ last meeting, and it probably won’t take long to notice that it’s head coach Nick Saban.

Yes, the former Alabama head coach won’t be on the sideline for the Crimson Tide, which is only their second Iron Bowl since 2006 (missed 2020). Because of that, it also means a new era begins for Alabama in one of college football’s greatest rivalries, as Kalen DeBoer prepares to lead the Crimson Tide on the field for the first time against Auburn.

If he can do the same, DeBoer will have a lot to offer, as Saban achieved significant success against in-state rivals despite struggling at times during his time in Tuscaloosa from 2007 to 2023.

In fact, during the 17 seasons Saban played at Alabama, Auburn faced five different head coaches in Tommy Tuberville, Gene Chizik, Gus Malzahn, Bryan Harsin and Hugh Freeze.

So, ahead of the first Iron Bowl of the DeBoer era this Saturday, let’s take a look back and rank the best Alabama-Auburn games during the Nick Saban era, starting with #17.
