Raj Sidpara was sentenced to life imprisonment

What’s the story?

An Indian-origin man, Raj Sidpara, has been sentenced to life in prison by a British court for the brutal murder of his girlfriend in May.

The 50-year-old Leicester resident was convicted at Leicester Crown Court for the killing of Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger.

The court ordered a minimum sentence of 21 years before Sidpara could be eligible for parole.

Victim found dead with serious injuries

Remarkably, the couple had been together for around five months before the horrific incident.

On May 6, rescue workers were called to Sidpara’s residence on Tarbat Road, where Riaz was found dead with severe facial injuries and several broken ribs.

The court was told Riaz had “two huge black eyes”, bleeding on the brain and 20 broken ribs.

Sidpara’s story of alcohol addiction and crime

Sidpara had already pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October but denied any intention to kill or cause serious harm.

Judge William Harbage criticized Sidpara for refusing to explain his actions, calling them “savage and merciless.”

The court also heard that Sidpara was diagnosed with alcohol dependence syndrome and had 24 convictions for 46 offenses including threatening to kill and harassment.
