After the latest episode of Outlander delivered way too much tragedy, one star told us what was "so funny" about filming her death

Warning: There are spoilers for episode 10 of Outlander Season 7 titled “Brotherly Love.”

Outlander Season 7 returned to Starz after its long hiatus with an emotional midseason premiere last week on the 2024 TV schedule, only to be marred by “Brotherly Love” with the death of Ian Murray in Scotland, the death of Arch Bug in Philadelphia, etc to top it off Jamie may be dead and lost at sea. Even Jenny’s future looked a bit bleak as she had to run Lallybroch without Ian at her side. All in all, this was a pretty tragic episode of the hit drama, but Steven Cree had a thoughtful and entertaining take on his character’s ending that puts a slightly sillier twist on Ian’s death.

Older Ian Murray – or, as the subtitles bluntly call him, “Old Ian” – and Jamie had a few moments to themselves and laughed it off Outlander Time travel and the age difference between Jamie and Claire, which the Murrays had only just found out about. The conversation seemed to have taken a lot out of the sick man, and he died in bed shortly afterwards, with “Jenny” as the last word. A sign for the waterworks!

This happened fairly early in “Brotherly Love” and was arguably the first major tragedy in Season 7B up to that point, and I think that difference still exists at the end of the episode. I suspect that not too many fans will be mourning Arch Bug after Rachel almost died in his mad quest for revenge against young Ian, and I think that’s a safe bet Outlander didn’t actually kill Jamie Fraser for good in the second episode after the break.

I spoke to Steven Cree about the death of Old Ian, with the actor reprising his role almost six years after his last appearance in Season 4. I asked during Starz Outlander In a press conference, he recounted what it was like for him to come back only to film a tearful ending not too long after, and he began his reaction by recounting the scene, which was actually even more emotional than Ian’s death, and said :

The most emotional scene ever filmed was actually the scene with John Bell (in Episode 9). The scene where we have the conversation, because that felt like a pretty heartbreaking and emotional scene, but also in the sense that there’s a lot of joy in that scene and Ian trying a lot to pass on his fatherly wisdom and kind of knowing , that this may be the last time they ever have a conversation like this. So it was very emotional.

In the scene where old Ian tells young Ian to confess his feelings to Rachel during their conversation in the midseason premiere, there was definitely joy, but also some of the sadness of knowing that the older one probably already did would be dead if the younger and the younger would confess their feelings Claire came back to America.

According to Steven Cree, the death scene, which was definitely emotional to watch, was less emotional to film. He explained:

The actual dying itself was just funny when it was over because we did it at the end of the day. Suddenly you close the scene and that’s it, and it’s over. There is no fanfare. There were no cards from Sam Heughan. There was no, “Thank you for being here for ten years.” There were no trumpets. In fact, I ended up having to hold the camera myself. Everyone was gone. I said, ‘Wait, I still have to die.’ Can we celebrate this a little bit more or something?’

It was very clear in our interview that Cree wasn’t exactly bitter when he shared that the filming of Ian’s death was pretty unceremonious, and it’s funny to imagine that day on set with no fanfare after the finished product in Brotherly Love “ was so heartbreaking. “For my part, I’m glad he was able to reprise his role in Season 7B, as did Nell Hudson as Laoghaire and Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie.

Jenny was played by Kristin Atherton in season 7 to replace original actress Laura Donnelly, with Atherton having to portray these key relationships with Jamie and with Ian. Cree continued:

In a way, it’s kind of bittersweet because what a great thing, to have the opportunity to go on this journey with this character for over 10 years is really an amazing thing. But that is also the end.

Steven Cree was a very familiar face of both Outlanderwas featured in the drama’s first four seasons, but the drama’s subsequent migration to the American colonies meant fewer opportunities to introduce the Lallybroch characters. Unfortunately, “Brotherly Love” may have been the last we saw of the old Ian Murray, unless he appears in flashbacks or through more time travel misadventures like the one that brought Roger and Buck to Geillis Duncan’s doorstep.

The show moves along pretty quickly though Outlander It suggests that it manages to wrap up the Lallybroch and Arch Bug stories while also telling stories about Claire as a spy, Jamie’s presumed death and everything that awaits William, Rachel and Young Ian in just one episode.

The eighth season will also be the last, so it’s possible that the team has been working behind the scenes to cram as much as possible into the seventh season to improve the swansong.
