Spurs open war chest to find perfect Wemby partner

The San Antonio Spurs are looking more and more like a playoff team, but may need some help to get where they want to be. This could potentially require a trade, and Bleacher Report’s Greg Schwartz has identified several potential targets that could help the Spurs. Let’s take a look at what makes the most sense.

NBA analyst Zach Lowe previously suggested a trade between the Blazers and Spurs involving Anfernee Simons and Keldon Johnson. Simons was coming off the best season of his career back then, but isn’t having as strong a year now, which could lower his trade value.

The same goes for Johnson, who has played well at times but his production has declined while playing a smaller role. A player swap could make sense as the Blazers could cede the point guard position to Scoot Henderson, who would be a real tank commander.

As for the Spurs, their second unit is full of non-shooters, forcing them to play tough battles. Adding one of the best volume 3-point shooters to the bench would strengthen the team’s offense. You should definitely consider this type of trading.

Grade: A

Spurs fans have had numerous opportunities to see Collin Sexton play with the Spurs after he played against the Utah Jazz four times in the first five weeks of the season. Sexton is known for his scoring ability, particularly as a 3-point shooter and driver, which could make sense for the Spurs off the bench. Especially if Devin Vassell returns to the starting lineup.

His contract fits well with Johnson’s, so a direct move is possible if the Spurs see Sexton as an upgrade.

The Memphis Grizzlies forward is having a solid season despite the absence of his best players. At 1.90 m, he has good size and can hit open threes, make drives and score on cuts to the basket. However, Spurs already have a good squad of big players around Victor Wembanyama with Zach Collins, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, Charles Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili.

Therefore, they have less need for a player like Aldama, although his playstyle makes him an interesting option. Of the three players on Bleacher Reports’ list, he perhaps makes the least sense, as he wouldn’t significantly improve the Spurs’ options at power forward.

Grade: C

As for the best fit, Simons would likely make the most sense if Johnson and perhaps another asset like the Charlotte Hornets’ lottery-protected 2025 were used first in a potential deal to acquire him.

Overall, since the Spurs have been playing their best basketball in recent seasons, it makes sense for them to look for a deal to continue improving. If they’re trying to advance to the playoffs, Simons should be at the top of their list.
