Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is under serious criticism amid a disappointing season

Kalen Deboer’s first season at Alabama was lackluster, especially by the standards that Nick Saban brought to the Crimson Tide. As a result, many Alabama fans have already begun calling for his removal from the football program.

Not unlike USC’s Lincoln Riley, who found himself in a similar situation, DeBoer had great success before taking his position with the Tide. His previous job in Washington was a complete success.

On the Huskies’ official website, DeBoer is lovingly described: “In his first year at UW, he led the Huskies to an overall record of 11-2, including a 3-0 mark against ranked teams and a win over Texas at the Valero Alamo Bowl. His Huskies defeated their three Northwestern rivals, finished in a tie for second place in the Pac-12, and he was named Pac-12 Assistant Coach of the Year. He was also the Associated Press Pac-12 Coach of the Year and received the inaugural Seattle Sports Leader of the Year award at the 88th Annual Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards in February 2023.

“Not only were there 11 wins in 2022, three more than any first-year head coach in UW history had ever compiled, DeBoer also became the first UW football coach to win a bowl game in his first season.”

The logic follows that DeBoer should then hypothetically perform even better with the Crimson Tide’s immense talent. Still, he struggled to get his team to the top, suffering brutal losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and, worst of all, a brutal loss to an incredibly underperforming Oklahoma team.

The Tide lost that game to Oklahoma 24-3 despite the Sooners only passing for 68 yards in the entire game. This was the first time since 2004 that the Tide scored so few points. The worst part was that DeBoer’s team even scored the first goal and scored the only points in the first quarter – they just thought that would be enough for the whole game.

With this loss, the Tide will most likely miss the College Football Playoff this season, despite the recently implemented 12-team field.

In the midst of such a disappointing season, many Alabama fans are already calling for DeBoer’s head. An angry fan on

One fan even went so far as to speculate that Alabama could theoretically release DeBoer before the end of the Iron Bowl to save buyout money. Will Alabama do that?

Absolutely not. Even ignoring the possibility of this crazy theory, the legal consequences would be immense.

Whatever the case, it’s abundantly clear that DeBoer’s days in Tuscaloosa could be numbered – especially if he’s unable to perform in the Iron Bowl.
